  About the Author

  Chapter 1

“Can I help you with that, Miss Tegan?”

Samantha Mary Tegan, Sam to her friends, reached for her carry-on bag that she had stored in the overhead compartment and smiled at the male flight attendant. His name was Danny and he had been flirting with her the past two hours.

“I’ve got it.” She easily pulled the heavy bag down like it weighed nothing. Well, with her werewolf strength it pretty much didn’t.

As she began moving past him, he reached out and held her arm. “I’ll be staying overnight and then taking a new flight tomorrow morning. I was hoping that we could maybe have dinner.”

Sam was taken aback. “I’m…sorry. I’ve got to spend time with my family. I haven’t seen them in months and, honestly, I don’t date strangers.”

“We could get to know each other better over a few drinks.”

“Actually, I’m kind of seeing someone, but thanks for the offer.”

She moved on and could overhear his comment even though it was whispered. “Lucky bastard.”

Sam turned to look at him and gave him a smile. It was always such a strange feeling getting hit on by random men. It hadn’t always been like that. Her senior year in high school started out boring, with one guy from the school band asking her out. Then, after one date went horribly wrong, her life was changed forever.

The guy she was dating, Carter Johnson, turned out to be a lone werewolf who had decided that he wanted Sam to become his mate. Sam just thought he was a crazy asshole and tried to sneak out on him at the restaurant, but he caught then bit her. A lot of what happened afterward was fuzzy, but getting bitten and the pain from the change was the most horrific thing she had ever gone through. The agony of having her insides twist and turn and her bones pop out of place was gone but the memory would stay with her forever.

Not everything that came from that night was awful. Her mother, Jackie, had been there and helped her through all of it. It had pushed their mother-daughter bond to its limits but they came out all the stronger for it. Now their family of two had expanded.

Besides getting heightened senses, increased strength, and the ability to change into a wolf, Sam also got a flawless complexion, with darker and richer chestnut brown hair and fuller lips. It was like getting an all-over body lift without the surgery. She went from being average looking to—as her mom’s friend Mary said—a sensual bombshell. If her body didn’t attract attention from men then her pheromones did. Men, paranormal or human, couldn’t seem to resist her natural scent.

Sam went through the gate and down to the luggage pickup area of the terminal. She saw her mother standing there by herself, and as soon as they caught sight of each other they both smiled with joy. She found herself quickly wrapped up into a very strong and almost suffocating vampire hug. Oh yeah, her mother had been turned into a vampire by the way. It was a busy senior year.

“Oh, my baby girl! I have missed you so much!”

“Mom! I need a little air.”

Her mom reluctantly released her. “Sorry, dear.”

“Where are Adrian and Aiden?” She had to admit feeling a little disappointed that more people hadn’t come to welcome her home.

“I wanted to greet you on my own. I feel like I haven’t got to spend any quality time with you at all while you’ve been in college. I’ve been so busy with the horse ranch and raising your brother, and Adrian has had to do some traveling to check on his out-of-state business affairs. It’s been really hectic.”

Sam knew that, which was why she’d come back early instead of going to the graduation ceremony. She knew her family would have a hard time attending and she would rather have a private celebration anyway.

They stopped by the luggage ramp and waited for her big suitcase to make its way on the conveyer belt.

“Let me get that for you.” Her mom picked up the large suitcase in one hand easily. “Now, I’ve got your old room all ready for you. New sheets on the bed and everything polished. It’s going to be so great to have you back home, and Aiden is beyond excited.”

Sam bit her lip, not sure how to tell her mother she was going to look for her own place. She figured she would wait until she was actually home and not in public. Her mother was going to pitch a fit.

They walked to the parking lot and loaded her bags in the trunk. Men passing them by were checking out both her and her mother. Since Jackie had been changed into a vampire by her now husband, Adrian, she had also had an upgrade in the looks department. Her mom looked almost her age, which was awkward at times whenever she caught her male friends checking her mom out.

“So is there anything new happening in Strange Lake Falls?”

“I found out our mayor is a bear.”

“Really? I didn’t see that coming.”

“Me either. He is a big son of a bitch. Mary and I have been wondering if he’s big in the trunk department, too.”

“Mom! Both of you are married women!” She felt heat rise to her cheeks imagining her mother and her mother’s best friend discussing cocks. It was too much.

Jackie chuckled. “We’re women who can admire a nicely packaged man when we see one. Oh, I also hear he is still single.”

And there it was. She had been back exactly twenty-five minutes and her mother was already trying to set her up with a man, this one with a huge trunk.

“You know I’m still seeing someone.”

“That nice young man from your college?”

“Yes, Ben Browning. He’ll be coming here in a few days. I told him I wanted time to spend with my family first.”

“Adrian and I are looking forward to getting to know Ben much better.”

By that her mom really meant that it would give them time to run a background check. “Great.”

  Chapter 2

As they pulled into the long driveway she noticed the mailbox had been replaced. It used to say “Tegan” but now it said “Belliveau”. That wasn’t the only change to her childhood home her mother and stepfather had made over the last few years.

They had to rebuild the farmhouse because of a fire. They lost some photo albums and her dolls she had planned to keep for her children. When it came down to it, those were all things that could be easily replaced. No one died in the fire and they had each other. That’s what really mattered.

“Oh, look, honey, Alpha Ric and Mary are here.”

She smiled seeing her alpha’s pickup truck. “I’m looking forward to running with the pack again.”

“When did you last shift?” her mother asked with concern.

>   Sam shrugged. “It’s probably been months, since I came to visit for Christmas.”

  “Samantha Mary Tegan!”

“Mom, there was nowhere for me shift and run on the college campus.”

They didn’t say anything else as her mother parked her car. They got out and Jackie called, “Leave your bags, we’ll get them later.”

Damn, she’d been home less than fifteen minutes and she was already in trouble with her mom. She walked up the pretty white porch steps and waited for her mom to open the door. Jackie turned the handle and swung it open wide. Then she waited for Sam to go into the house first.

“Surprise!” A crowd of people in the living room shouted out.

She gasped and laughed. “You guys!”

Her stepfather and little brother hugged her first then she was swept into the crowd of family friends, all of whom welcomed her home and gave her hugs and kisses.

“You look beautiful,” Jay told her after kissing her cheek. She smiled at him as his twin brother, Rod, came up to outdo him.

“She always looks beautiful, but now she’s even sexier than before. What have you been doing at that college? More importantly, who have you been doing?” Rod trapped her in a bear hug and kissed her on her lips.

Sam laughed and punched Rod in the arm. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”

“I would,” Rod told her with seriousness.

  “Me, too. Who is he?”

“Ben, and he’ll be down in a few days. You can meet him then.”

“Is he a werewolf?” Rod asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Don’t hug her, Rod. Oh, honey, I’m so glad you’re here.” Mary—her mother’s best friend, the mother of her own best friend, and the mate to her alpha—hugged her tight.

  “Where are the babies?”

Mary pointed across the room to her mate. “Ric has them. They won’t settle down because of the crowd, they’re just so excited.”

Sam watched as Mary walked over to her mate with the babies. They were getting big. She’d missed out on so much while she’d been gone. Sam spoke to almost everyone there, ate a plate of food her mother handed her, and drank a second beer.

It was hot and the house was packed full of people. She needed to get some fresh air. While her mom was distracted, she made her way to the French doors leading out to the pool. It was a cool night, which was why no one was swimming. It also felt like it was going to rain.

  “Hello, Samantha.”

Oh God, he was here. She turned around and faced the man who had haunted her dreams for years.

  “Brock, good to see you.”

  “It’s been a while—too long.”

“Not long enough.” Sam couldn’t help but think back to the second night that changed her life forever.

  *****

Sam ran through the woods, the scent of a rabbit ahead of her. She was determined to catch it first before the others. She had been the youngest werewolf added to the pack but she was quickly learning everything there was to know.

Sam had been away at college the last few years but now she was ready to come home. She needed to find a job somewhere local. It was kind of a hard thing to do to go to a job interview with two bodyguards following you around.

Her stepfather, Adrian, was being overprotective assigning the guards for her. She didn’t mind Christian, but the male vampire guard was too much. He got on her nerves, always pressing her limits and frustrating her to no end. She knew she was as annoying to him as he was to her. She couldn’t help but push his buttons whenever she got a chance. He was so easy.

If it was just the teasing, she could put up with it. There was an awkwardness that came from their extreme sexual attraction for one another. No matter how hard they fought, it seemed to only get stronger. Sam wasn’t sure how much longer she would be able to resist.

The rabbit had stopped on the large roots of a nearby tree. Sam shuffled her paws getting ready to pounce.

Snap! A heavy foot broke a twig, making the rabbit scamper in the opposite direction.

Sam shifted to her naked human form and turned to glare at the vampire who’d caused her to lose her prize. “Damn it, Brock! I almost had him.” She placed her hands on her hips.

Brock moved forward until the moonlight shone against his handsome face. “You wouldn’t have got it anyway.”

  “I would too have.”

“Nope, you hesitated. You need to learn, Samantha, when you have prey in your sights, you can’t hesitate for a second or it will slip through your fingers and others will take what should be yours.” His voice was deep and husky and his eyes traveled up her bare body.

Sam couldn’t help but shiver with desire. He always did this to her, get her aroused and then leave her untouched. Well, she’d had enough of the celibate dance. She was ready for the full sexual experience.

She stepped closer to him, bringing her less than an arm’s length away. “Maybe I need a good teacher to show me how things should be done. The twins offered to acclimate me to the social scene in Strange Lake Falls.”

He growled and took a step closer. “You don’t need the twins.”

Sam could feel the coolness of his skin. She reached up and ran a finger down his shirt stretched across his muscled chest. “Really? What do I need?”

Brock surprised her by pulling her into his arms and against his body. “You need me.”

She had no defense against his kiss. Really, she didn’t want to fight him. That’s what she had been doing since the first time she met him—fighting her response to him. He did the same because Sam was his employer’s stepdaughter. She was off-limits to him and he to her, which only made their attraction stronger.

Their clothes were in the way. She gripped his collar and used her werewolf strength to rip the shirt down the center. She shoved it over his shoulders.

He chuckled. “I’ve never had a female tear my clothes off before. I like it.”

“If you don’t get these pants off, you’ll have to go back wearing nothing. Of course, that’s not a problem for me since I’m a werewolf.”

His hands were all over her. He gently squeezed her breasts, tweaking her nipples into hard little points. Sam felt the tingly pressure building inside her; it was like a spark that quickly fanned into a full fire of need.

“God, how I’ve wanted you.” He groaned as he lifted her up.

She wrapped her legs around his waist and felt his stiff, heavy cock against her wet pussy. Sam looked down between their bodies, and his size made her pause. She hadn’t been with anyone before. What if he didn’t fit?

  “Um…Brock.”

  “Look at me.”

She looked up at him as she felt her back being pressed against a tree trunk. Sam knew she should tell him that she was inexperienced but all thoughts fled her mind when he took her lips again in a more intense and deep kiss. She couldn’t breathe, but who needed oxygen anyway?

He lifted her entrance over his cock then plunged deeply inside her. She moaned in pain from the breach. He froze looking down at her.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know. I would have been gentler.”

The pain faded and a need for him to go deeper became insistent. “I need you to move…in me.”

He pressed his forehead against hers and began a slow and steady thrust in and out. She loved the feel of him inside her. She’d never known how empty she was until he filled her completely. Now she never wanted to be empty again.

Sam felt something building, trying to break free. It wasn’t her wolf. Her wolf was ecstatic and wanted her to bite him and claim him as theirs. Instead, she tilted her head back against the tree and looked up at the stars peeking through its limbs. Everything seemed brighter and more beautiful.

Brock reached down between them and teased her clit with his fingers. It was exactly what she needed to reach the cliff top and fall over. Sam fell and fell, screaming out his name as her first ever orgasm rocked her whole body.

  Sam faintly heard his ro
ar of release as he pulled out of her. He held her to him as he slid down to his knees. When he looked at her she saw a mixture of pleasure, sadness, longing, and resignation.

“Are you okay? Did I hurt you?” Brock sat her on the ground.

  “I’m fine. Are you okay?”

He stood up and went to retrieve his clothes. “That shouldn’t have happened. I’m sorry, it was a mistake.”

She blinked in confusion then in pain. He had given her the most beautiful experience of her life only to ruin it all.

Sam stood and glared at him. She refused to cry in front of him. “You asshole! Stay away from me.” She shifted into her wolf, who growled at him before taking off into the woods. She heard him calling out for her but she didn’t stop running.

  *****

How many nights were her dreams invaded by his kisses and then his betrayal? Too many to count. No matter how long it had been or how hard Sam tried to prepare herself for it, Sam wasn’t quite ready for the emotions he brought out in her. She took a deep breath and kept her emotions in check as she faced him.

  Chapter 3

Brock couldn’t take his eyes off her. Sam was even more beautiful than the last time he saw her. He didn’t want to think about that night. He had made the biggest mistake of his life leaving her like that, even if it had been the right thing to do. He would always put her safety and well-being first, although it slowly killed him on the inside.

“I didn’t know you would be here.” She kept a few feet away from him.

“I stopped by to welcome you home.” He closed the distance between them.

Brock licked his lips when she bent down to pick up one of her brother’s pool toys. The jeans she was wearing were low on her hips and he got a glimpse of skin. Sam stood up straight and her halter top hugged her generous breasts. Damn, she isn’t wearing a bra. Images of her naked and pliable as he drilled his cock into her filled his mind, and he had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from groaning with need.
