  The next day

  “Are you alright Lily?”

  Lily blinked at Maggie’s question. “What?” She had agreed to come over to Maggie’s quarters to have lunch. Mrs. Gordon and Thomas were taking a tour of the ship with Liam.

  “I asked if you were okay. You’ve been doodling on your napkin for a while now.”

  Mrs. Gordon and Maggie discussing her sex life was just too much. “I need to go.”

  Maggie frowned. “Lily, you can talk to me about anything. You know that right?”

  Lily leaned down and hugged her. “I know, honey. You’re my best friend and I love you dearly, but there are some things I have to work out for myself.”

  “Okay, just know that I love you and want you to be happy. I want that for both you and Jared.”

  “I love you too and thanks. I’ll talk to you later.” Lily started toward the door when Maggie called out to her.

  “Lily, you deserve to be happy and I’m sure that your husband would have wanted you to move on. Jared is a good guy, one of the best. I think he would be really good for both you and Thomas.”

  Lily nodded her head. “I know that. He’s been nothing but wonderful to Thomas and me. It’s not really about him, it’s about me. I don’t know if I’m ready to let another man into my life. After the major disappointment with Taylor—I just really need to think thoroughly about letting anyone in my life that could hurt me.”

  “I get it, I really do. I wasn’t sure I would ever be able to let another man touch me after what Ben did to me. I took a chance with Liam and I haven’t regretted it, not once. He’s the love of my life and now we have created a new life.” Maggie started choking up.

  Lily went back to hug her again. “I am so happy for you Maggie, and I’m glad you found Liam.”

  “It’s hard opening up and trusting someone, but it’s worth facing the fear to have a person in your life that would do anything for you. I just want you to be as happy as I am.”

  “I know. Talk to you later honey.” She kissed Maggie’s forehead before leaving. She was so grateful to have a friend like Maggie. All those years in the tunnels, she and Thomas would never have survived if it weren’t for Maggie and Walter Marks.

  She changed directions not wanting to go back to her quarters alone. All her thoughts were of Jared. It scared her how much she felt for him in such a short amount of time. She’d dated Shawn through high school, only breaking up with him for a short time while she went to college and he entered the Air Force.

  She was on her third year of college and working part time as a model when Shawn popped the question. He also insisted they live together which meant she needed to work full time help pay for their apartment. Soon, she had less time for school because of work and the time that Shawn expected her to spend with him. She took some online courses from home, and on weekends she did nursing rotations while carrying Thomas. She had been so close to graduating, a few more classes and another residency then she could have been done. She would have quit modeling altogether and just concentrated on nursing and raising Thomas.

  Shawn wanted her to stay at home with the baby, but Lily was used to making herself useful and her little bit of money kept them in the lifestyle that they preferred. He
had never really been supportive of her going to nursing school. He tolerated the modeling because he liked to show her off and her income paid for the lifestyle they enjoyed. He thought they would live some high and mighty political social life and put all his effort into creating a military career. All she wanted was to help people and to have her own family.

  She couldn’t help but compare Jared and Shawn. Jared understood her need to help people. Whenever she came to the med facility to learn about the Drastan’s medical technology, he was patient and helpful. He never turned her away. It made her feel like they were equals.

  Shawn and Jared were different in other ways too. Sexually, she never complained because things were good for her and Shawn, but there were times that she wished for more passion. Shawn tended to take care of his own needs first. That was vastly different from Jared.

  Chapter 14

  She looked up and found that she had walked to the Mediko. Wow, her subconscious must be telling her something. The door opened and Liam was walking out with Mrs. Gordon.

  “Hi. Did the tour go okay? Why are you in the Mediko?”
